Razorbacks move up to second in baseball coaches poll

FAYETTEVILLE — Arkansas moved up to No. 2 in this week’s USA Today Baseball Coaches poll after a series win at Missouri.

The Razorbacks (18-4, 5-1 SEC) are ranked behind Tennessee, which passed first place with a series sweep at the time. 2 Ole Miss. Arkansas was ranked fourth and Tennessee was ranked fifth last week.

Volunteers received 30 of 31 first-place votes in this week’s poll. Virginia, ranked third, received the other vote for first place.

Arkansas received four first-place votes last week — one of five teams to receive multiple first-place votes as voters tore up which team was best.

Tennessee (23-1, 6-0) made a strong case for the top spot this weekend as they edged out Ole Miss by a combined score of 26-7. The Volunteers, coached by former Arkansas assistant Tony Vitello, will have an early test of their new standings this week with a trip to Vanderbilt, which was No. 1 last week before a series loss at South Carolina.

The Commodores are ranked fifth this week. The other SEC-ranked teams this week are: Ole Miss (10), LSU (12), Florida (13) and Georgia (17).

The SEC and ACC are tied with seven teams each in the poll.

Arkansas is expected to play five times at home this week, including two against Arkansas-Little Rock starting Tuesday. The Razorbacks are scheduled to face three-time defending national champion Mississippi State this weekend.

The Bulldogs (15-10, 3-3) received no votes in this week’s poll after a 2-1 weekend against Alabama. Mississippi State was seeded two weeks ago ahead of a series loss to Georgia and was receiving votes last week.

Stanford fell out of this week’s poll after climbing to No. 3 following a win over Arkansas on neutral ground in Round Rock, Texas on Feb. 27. The Cardinal (12-8, 4-5 Pac-12) was ranked No. 24 last week and swept through Washington State over the weekend.

Arkansas has been ranked in 67 consecutive coaching polls since 2017. The Razorbacks have been in the top 10 in 22 consecutive polls.

The Coaches Poll is the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette record ranking.
