Five CUI baseball players win accolades across region
IRVINE, Calif .– The Irvine baseball team from Concordia University notched a total of five Eagles on two different All-Region teams this week.
Launcher Evan Larsen and acrobat Matt Lautz were the two All-Region first team selections by the D2CCA (Division 2 Conference Commissioners Association). First baseman Bailey collins and designated hitter Cooper moore were both named second All-Region team by the D2CCA.
D2CCA selections are nominated and voted on by the sports information directors of PacWest, GNAC and CCAA in the NCAA DII West region.
Meanwhile, the outfielder of CUI Jair Donovan joined Collins, Lautz and Moore as All-Region second team caps by the National College Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA).
This is the second time in his career that Moore has been named the region’s second all-star by both organizations as designated hitter. His 11 home runs and 41 RBIs, the top of the team, certainly have something to do with it. The Huntington Beach, Calif. Native also had a .364 batting average, the team’s best among starters and a whopping 1.179 OPS, which was really impressive. Moore ended his CUI career in the CUI top five for career homers (24) despite only playing three seasons.
Lautz brilliantly patrolled center field for the third year in a row and used his speed on the bases to make an impact on second place in the batting order. The high school alumnus Agoura Hills led CUI in runs (45), walks (27) and percentage on base (0.470) as well as doubles (9) and triples (3) … He hit 0.331 and was second on the team with four homers and five interceptions.
Evan Larsen was also named PacWest Newcomer of the Year and led all of CUI’s starting pitchers with 59 strikeouts as one of Saturday’s star pitchers. He was undefeated (5-0) in nine starts and led the CUI starting rotation with a 4.08 ERA and registered at least seven strikeouts in four of his nine starts.
Collins tied the school’s record for career home runs (35) and leaves his legacy to Concordia, ranked No.1 in career and strikeouts. The Littleton, Colo. Native was a machine on the base, pitching PacWest’s 14 best home runs this season while hitting seven long balls in his last 13 games.
Donovan has been the team’s first with 10 interceptions this year, while reaching .321 with four homers and 22 RBIs. The Chino Hills, Calif. Right fielder posted a base percentage of 0.453 and is among the all-time best-6 at CUI with 19 career homers.
These five exceptional eagles were first team or second team All-PacWest selections in addition to helping CUI to finish 10-3 down the stretch. The final home games of the season featured a Fresno Pacific sweep on a memorable senior day for 19 outgoing Eagles.
