East Baton Rouge school system finds tactics to tackle national teacher shortage problem

BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) – The East Baton Rouge school system continues its search for teachers as the country faces a shortage of educators.

For Erin Keys, teaching in the midst of a pandemic is even more difficult with the continued shortage of teachers.

“Teaching during COVID obviously isn’t easy, it hasn’t been easy for anyone in any profession,” said Erin Keys, teacher, Sherwood Middle School.

The district held a mid-year job fair on Wednesday.

“The national teacher shortage, I think it’s been happening for a while, and then I think with the pandemic it’s accelerated everything,” said Dana Morrison, recruiting manager, East Baton Rouge School System. “My goal today was to recruit 13 paraeducators or teachers.”

The district is moving people to schools with fewer teachers to meet demand. The greatest need is for special needs and ESL educators.

Cesar Rico leads the district’s ESL program. He is currently looking to fill up to ten positions.

“It’s actually more than the normal amount, it’s only for two different reasons. One, of course, the shortage, but another reason is also that we emphasize the importance of ensuring that we have more staff in our school system to support our children,” said Rico.

State Education Superintendent Cade Brumley says half of all teachers leave the profession after five years. 60 percent of teachers quit after a decade.

EBRSS offers programs for those seeking career changes and those who want to continue to progress in education.

Leaders hope more people will choose a career in education.

“Even if there is a shortage of teachers and you have to cover lessons from time to time, it is still rewarding. At the end of the day, I think if you wanted to be an educator because you love kids, it’s always worth it, for me, that’s what I show up for work every day,” Keys said.

EBRSS is recruiting for the following positions:

  • Certified teachers
  • office staff
  • Tutoring
  • Transport
  • special education
  • ALS
  • career changers
  • Paraprofessionals
